A doula’s work starts with listening.

Yes, we use our head, hands, intuition, sense of humor...

But we use our ears first.

  • Evidence-based information about newborn care and development, postpartum adjustment, feeding / lactation, parent-baby bonding, etc.

  • Nonjudgmental support as you make decisions about your baby (e.g., feeding, soothing, sleeping, bathing)

  • Emotional care, attentiveness to perinatal mental health disorders

  • Practical assistance caring for you, your baby, and your family

  • Household help, including light cleaning, baby laundry, and occasional meals

  • Fostering sibling adjustment with developmentally-appropriate approaches to sibling-newborn bonding

  • Referrals to educational or community resources

I might be the doula for you if

…you value both evidence and intuition.

Research can answer some questions (e.g., “do epidurals prolong the pushing stage?”) but not others (e.g., “where do I want my baby to sleep?”). My PhD in research methodology means I can help you understand the current evidence on different interventions and options. And I can help you combine that evidence with your own preferences to make decisions that are right for you and your baby.

…you want information and support, not an agenda.

Some help seems to come with an agenda - subtle suggestions that there’s an ideal way you ought to approach birth or postpartum adjustment. The decisions you make about how to birth or care for your baby do not matter to me. My job is the same regardless: understand and support your choices.

…your birth or postpartum experience is unconventional.

Are you giving birth as a surrogate? Or to a baby who will be welcomed into an adoptive family? Are you a couple of first-time moms or dads, excited about bringing your newborn home? Some aspects of your experiences are importantly distinct, others are universal, and I would be delighted to support you through all of it.
